The Standard, Hong Kong’s equivalent of the Metro, has interesting news today: the first HKD$1 DAB radio.
DAB goes live in Hong Kong later this year, with a total of 18 digital radio stations launching in November from established and new broadcasters. Hong Kong’s an odd radio market, with a remarkably diverse population but access to very few FM frequencies: to cover the whole territory requires seven transmitter sites (and thus up to seven different FM frequencies); and if that wasn’t enough, the Chinese metropolis of Shenzen is just over the border to the north, and they probably want FM frequencies too.
DAB therefore has a great opportunity in Hong Kong to be marketed on choice. Additional radio stations to the existing ones on FM and AM in the territory; appealing to different sections of the population: to a country that already loves its radio.
